Alberta's Low Provincial Tax Advantage

While Alberta's minimum wage is lower than Ontario or BC, Albertan minimum wage workers benefit from the $21,003 basic personal amount — the highest in Canada. A full-time worker at $15/hr earning $31,200 annually pays nearly zero provincial income tax thanks to this credit. Combined with no PST, Alberta minimum wage workers keep more of each dollar compared to workers in Quebec or Ontario at similar wages.

Will Alberta Minimum Wage Increase?

Alberta has not announced a scheduled general minimum wage increase as of early 2025. The province has the longest period without an increase among major provinces — the rate has been frozen at $15.00 since June 2018. Advocates have called for alignment with BC and Ontario rates, but no legislation has been introduced for 2025.
