British Columbia students access provincial and federal student funding through StudentAidBC, the provincial program that coordinates BC's own student loans with the federal Canada Student Loans program. Together, they provide financial assistance to eligible BC residents studying at post-secondary institutions.
This guide covers how StudentAidBC works, how much you can receive, what grants are available, and how repayment works after graduation.
StudentAidBC (studentaidbc.ca) is BC's student financial assistance program. It delivers a combined package of federal and provincial aid — loans and grants — to eligible students. BC also eliminated interest on its provincial student loans in 2019, making BC one of the first provinces to go interest-free on the provincial side as well.
As of 2019, BC provincial student loans are also interest-free. Combined with the federal change in 2023, this means BC students now pay zero interest on both portions of their government student loans.
To qualify for StudentAidBC, you must:
Apply online at studentaidbc.ca. Applications open in June or July for the upcoming fall semester. The steps are:
Funds are sent directly to your school for tuition. Any remaining balance is deposited to your bank account.
StudentAidBC provides several types of funding:
Grants do not need to be repaid. The BC Access Grant is available to students with family incomes under approximately $175,000.
Your funding is based on assessed need — the gap between your education costs and what you're expected to contribute. For a typical full-time single student living away from home, the combined federal and BC provincial aid can range from $8,000 to $18,000+ per year depending on your income, program costs, and family situation.
The maximum weekly loan amount is set by the federal government and applies to BC students like all others. Your total package is capped based on this weekly limit multiplied by your weeks of study.
After you leave school, you have a 6-month grace period before repayment begins. Since BC eliminated interest on provincial loans, and the federal government eliminated interest in 2023, BC students pay zero interest on both portions of their student loan.
Repayment is managed through the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) for the combined loan. Standard repayment is up to 10 years. There are no prepayment penalties.
If your income is low after graduation, apply for the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) through the NSLSC. It can reduce or eliminate monthly payments based on your income.
BC offers additional loan forgiveness for certain health care professionals who work in underserved communities. Eligible professionals (nurses, pharmacists, midwives, and others) can have a portion of their BC provincial loan forgiven annually for each year of service in a qualifying community.
