Borrowell is a Canadian fintech that provides free weekly Equifax credit scores. Sign up with your name, email, address, and a verification question — no credit card required. Within minutes you have your Equifax score and a full credit report breakdown showing every account, inquiry, and public record.
Borrowell also shows your score history over time, explains which factors are helping or hurting, and provides personalized recommendations for financial products. It generates revenue through those recommendations — which is how it provides the service for free.
Credit Karma Canada offers free TransUnion credit scores and reports. The interface shows your score factors, account details, and a timeline of your score history. Like Borrowell, it monetizes through product recommendations. The score updates frequently and the full report shows every item on your TransUnion file.
Both Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada are legally required to provide you with a free copy of your credit report once per year upon request. This is your complete credit file — every account, every inquiry, every public record. It does not automatically include your score (the numerical score costs extra unless you use Borrowell or Credit Karma).
To request from Equifax: visit equifax.ca and use the free annual report option or mail a request form.
To request from TransUnion: visit transunion.ca and use the free annual report option.
These official report requests are soft inquiries and do not affect your score.

Hard inquiries occur when you apply for credit (mortgage, car loan, credit card). These are visible to other lenders and temporarily lower your score by 5–10 points. They remain on your report for 2 years.
At minimum, check your score and report once every 3 months. This allows you to:
If you're actively working to improve your score, checking weekly via Borrowell or Credit Karma is entirely appropriate — it's free and has no impact on your score.
