The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a tax-free monthly payment to eligible Canadian families to help with the cost of raising children under 18. In the 2024–25 benefit year, the maximum CCB is $7,787 per year ($648.91/month) for children under 6 and $6,570 per year ($547.50/month) for children 6–17. CCB is income-tested and reduces as family net income increases.
| Child's Age | Maximum Annual CCB | Maximum Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 years | $7,787 | $648.91 |
| 6 to 17 years | $6,570 | $547.50 |
These are the 2024–25 benefit year amounts. CCB is indexed to inflation and adjusted each July based on the previous year's tax returns.
CCB starts at the maximum amount and is reduced based on family net income (adjusted family net income from both spouses' or common-law partners' returns). The reduction occurs in two phases:
For most families, CCB phases out completely between $150,000–$200,000 depending on the number of children.
Families may also be eligible for the Child Disability Benefit (CDB) if their child qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). The maximum CDB in 2024–25 is $3,322/year per eligible child. It phases out for family incomes above ~$79,087.
If parents share custody (child lives at least 40% of the time with each parent), each parent receives 50% of the CCB they would be entitled to if they had full custody. Each parent must apply separately, and the income of each parent (plus their new spouse if applicable) is used for their calculation.
In addition to the federal CCB, several provinces offer supplemental child benefits:
