Free Credit Counselling in Canada 2025

Struggling with debt can feel overwhelming and isolating. Free, non-profit credit counselling services exist across Canada to help you understand your options, create a workable budget, and find a path forward — without judgment and without cost to you.

Free means free: Non-profit credit counsellors provide initial consultations at no charge and often provide ongoing service at low or no cost. Be cautious of for-profit "debt relief" companies that charge high fees for the same services.

What Is Credit Counselling?

Credit counselling is a financial guidance service. A trained credit counsellor will:

Credit counselling is not the same as bankruptcy or a consumer proposal, which are formal legal processes administered by Licensed Insolvency Trustees. Credit counselling is an informal, accessible first step.

What Is a Debt Management Plan (DMP)?

A Debt Management Plan is a structured repayment arrangement set up through a non-profit credit counselling agency. Here is how it works:

  1. Your counsellor contacts your creditors and negotiates reduced or eliminated interest
  2. You make one monthly payment to the credit counselling agency
  3. The agency distributes payments to your creditors
  4. You repay the full principal of your debts, but typically little to no interest
  5. Most DMPs take 3–5 years to complete

A DMP will affect your credit report — it shows up as an R7 rating — but it is a legal, organized way to get out of debt without bankruptcy. Once you complete the DMP and debts are paid, your credit begins to recover.

Watch out for for-profit debt relief companies. Companies that advertise "debt settlement" or "debt relief" services may charge fees of 15–25% of your total debt. They often promise to settle your debt for less than you owe, but this can damage your credit severely and the results are not guaranteed. Always start with a free non-profit credit counsellor before paying anyone for debt help.

The First Step: A Free Budget Review

Even if your situation feels unmanageable, a free budget review with a non-profit counsellor can clarify your options. In one session, you will typically:

There is no obligation after a free consultation. You are simply gathering information so you can make an informed decision.
