Monthly Budget Template for Canadians: A Simple Framework
A monthly budget template takes the overwhelm out of budgeting. Instead of starting from scratch each month, you have a structure that captures your Canadian income sources, all expense categories, and savings goals in one place.

- Side income, freelance, rental income
- Total Net Monthly Income

Download tip: Build this template in Google Sheets and share it with your partner. Google Sheets syncs in real time, so you both always see the same numbers. Create a new tab for each month and keep 12 months of budgets for year-over-year comparison.
Canadian Sinking Fund Categories to Add
Sinking funds are monthly savings for future irregular expenses. Add these categories to your template and contribute 1/12 of the expected annual cost each month:
- Vehicle maintenance and repairs
- Holiday gifts and travel
- Home maintenance and repairs
- Annual insurance renewals (if not monthly)
- Vacation fund
- Back to school (if applicable)
Monthly Review Checklist
At the end of each month, review your template against actuals:
- Did total spending stay within income?
- Which categories ran over budget?
- Were all savings contributions made?
- Any unexpected expenses that need a sinking fund category?
- Any income changes to reflect next month?
