What Is the NSLSC?

The National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) is the federal government's student loan servicer, operating on behalf of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). It manages Canada Student Loans — the federal portion of student aid — for borrowers in all provinces except Quebec and the Northwest Territories (which administer their own programs).

For Ontario OSAP borrowers, NSLSC manages both the federal Canada Student Loan and the Ontario provincial student loan under one account. For borrowers in most other provinces, NSLSC manages the federal portion while the province manages its own portion separately.

Setting Up Your NSLSC Account

Your NSLSC online account (at nslsc.ca) is your primary management portal. To set it up:

Returning to School — Interest-Free Status

If you return to school at least half-time, your Canada Student Loans automatically enter interest-free (non-repayment) status. No payments are required while enrolled. Contact NSLSC and provide your school enrolment confirmation to activate this status. Don't forget to re-register for repayment when you leave school again.

What Happens if You Default on NSLSC Loans

Federal student loans default after 270 days of missed payments. Upon default:

If you've defaulted, contact NSLSC immediately about rehabilitation. A rehabilitation agreement lets you make a series of payments to bring the loan back to good standing and restore credit reporting to positive status.

Provincial Loans — Managed Separately from NSLSC

If you have both federal and provincial student loans through OSAP (Ontario), NSLSC manages both. If you're in BC (StudentAid BC), Alberta (Alberta Student Aid), or another province, your provincial loan is managed by the province directly — log into your provincial student aid portal separately from your NSLSC account. Check both accounts to get the complete picture of what you owe.
