OSAP Guide 2025 — Ontario Student Assistance Program

OSAP is Ontario's student financial assistance program, delivering a combined federal and provincial funding package to eligible students. Reforms in recent years have increased the income threshold for grants, reduced reliance on loans for low-income students, and streamlined the application process.

2025 OSAP: Free tuition (grant-covered) for families earning under ~$50,000. Significant assistance for incomes up to $175,000. Apply at osap.gov.on.ca each spring.

How OSAP Calculates Your Package

OSAP calculates educational costs (tuition, books, housing, living expenses) minus expected resources (your income, parental contribution, assets). The gap is your assessed need. Lower-income students receive packages weighted toward non-repayable grants. Higher-income students receive more loans and fewer grants.

Income Thresholds

Applying

Apply at osap.gov.on.ca. Have your SIN, CRA consent form, parents' income (if dependent student), school and program information, and bank account ready. Applications open in April for the fall semester. Early application ensures funding arrives before tuition deadlines.

Dependent vs. Independent Students

Dependent students (typically under 22, not married, no children) have parental income included in the needs assessment. Independent students are assessed solely on their own income. If you've been out of school and fully financially independent for two years, you may qualify as independent.

Maintaining OSAP Eligibility

Pass at least 60% of attempted courses each year (40% in first year). Report income or enrollment changes promptly. Repay any over-awards if your circumstances change. Staying in good academic standing preserves your eligibility for the full duration of your program.

OSAP and Part-Time Students

Part-time students with dependants and low income may qualify for part-time OSAP. Apply through the same portal. Maximum part-time amounts are lower but meaningful for students managing family responsibilities alongside education.
