The National Research Council's IRAP is Canada's flagship innovation grant program for small and medium businesses. IRAP provides financial assistance for technical R&D projects — developing new products, processes, or services. Eligible costs include salaries of R&D employees and contractors. The typical contribution for an SME is $50,000 but larger project grants are possible. The program is delivered by NRC Industrial Technology Advisors (ITAs) who first assess your business and innovation activities. Apply at nrc-cnrc.gc.ca.
CDAP helps small businesses go digital. There are two streams: Grow Your Business Online (up to $2,400 for micro-businesses to adopt e-commerce) and Boost Your Business Technology (up to $15,000 grant to hire a digital advisor, plus access to a $100,000 interest-free BDC loan). To qualify for the Boost stream: 1+ full-time employees, $500K+ revenue in one of the past three years, and be a for-profit Canadian business. Apply at ised-isde.canada.ca/en/initiatives/cdap.
The federal government's Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES) provides funding through the Women Entrepreneurship Fund, the WES Ecosystem Fund, and the Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub. Grants range from small amounts for training and networking to larger project funding. Priority goes to majority women-owned businesses. Visit canada.ca/en/women-gender-equality/financial-help for current intake dates.
Canada's six Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) distribute grants based on geographic region:
RDA grants typically focus on innovation, export development, job creation, and rural business growth. Amounts vary widely ($25K to over $1M for large projects). These are competitive and require a detailed application. Contact your regional RDA office to discuss eligibility before investing time in a full application.
