Banking in Canada as a Sponsored Family Member

If you arrived in Canada through the Family Class sponsorship stream — as a sponsored spouse, partner, parent, grandparent, or dependent child — your immigration pathway is different from skilled worker or student streams, and so are some of your early financial considerations. This guide explains how banking works when you're a sponsored family member in Canada.

Your Immigration Status and Banking Rights

Sponsored family members arrive in Canada as permanent residents. This means you have the same banking rights as any other permanent resident from day one. Your sponsor's financial situation does not affect your ability to open bank accounts, apply for credit cards, or access any financial product. You are financially independent in the eyes of Canada's banking system.

Important: The sponsorship undertaking means your sponsor is responsible for your basic needs for a set number of years — but this does not affect your legal right to open your own accounts, earn your own income, or build your own credit history independently.

Opening a Bank Account as a Sponsored Family Member

To open a bank account, you need:

You do not need your sponsor to be present, co-sign, or verify anything. Banks will open your account based on your own identification. You do not need a SIN to open an account, though you should apply for one quickly.

Getting Your SIN as a Sponsored Family Member

Apply for your SIN at any Service Canada office as soon as you arrive. Bring your passport and PR card (or COPR if your PR card hasn't arrived yet). You'll typically receive your SIN the same day. As a sponsored PR, your SIN will begin with a digit other than 9 — it will be a permanent SIN, not the temporary SIN issued to work permit holders.

Newcomer Banking Programs

Sponsored family members qualify for all the same newcomer banking programs as other PRs:

Bring your PR card to the branch and explain you are a new permanent resident. These programs are available to you regardless of how you obtained your PR status.

Building Your Own Credit History

Building credit independently is especially important for sponsored family members. Even if your sponsor has excellent credit, you have no Canadian credit history of your own until you start building it. You will need your own credit history for:

Get a newcomer credit card from your bank immediately after opening your account. Use it for small regular purchases and pay in full monthly. Do not rely on being an authorized user on your sponsor's card as your only credit — authorized user history has limited effect on your own credit file in Canada.

TFSA for Sponsored Family Members

As a PR who is 18+, you can open a TFSA immediately. Your contribution room starts from the year of your arrival. The annual limit for 2025 is $7,000. Start contributing as soon as you have any savings — even a small amount growing tax-free is better than nothing.

Working as a Sponsored Family Member

Sponsored spouses and dependent children over 18 have open work authorization — you can work for any employer without needing a separate work permit. Sponsored parents and grandparents have some work authorization as well. Once you begin working, you will accumulate RRSP contribution room and may qualify for Employment Insurance. Your employer will deduct CPP contributions and income taxes from your paycheck, both of which go toward your future Canadian social safety net entitlements.

Financial Independence Within a Sponsorship

Some sponsored family members — particularly spouses — may arrive dependent on their sponsor for financial support. While this is a reality for many, it is important to establish your own financial independence as quickly as possible:

Financial independence protects you regardless of how your situation evolves.

Government Benefits for Sponsored Family Members

As a PR, you are entitled to:
