Canada does not have broad student loan forgiveness, but several targeted programs forgive debt for specific professions and circumstances. If you qualify, you could eliminate tens of thousands in federal student loans.
After 10 years on the Repayment Assistance Plan (15 years for borrowers with permanent disabilities), any remaining federal Canada Student Loan balance is forgiven by the government. This is the most broadly available forgiveness pathway — available to any borrower who qualifies for RAP and remains on it long-term.
Family doctors, medical residents in family medicine, nurse practitioners, and nurses who work full-time in eligible rural or remote communities qualify for annual loan forgiveness:
Apply annually at csnpe-nslsc.canada.ca with employment documentation from your rural community employer. Applications process within 60 days.
Borrowers with a severe permanent disability preventing work and loan repayment can apply for the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit — full forgiveness of remaining federal student loan balance. Requires documentation from two independent medical professionals. Provincial loans have separate disability provisions.
All Canada Student Loans are forgiven upon the borrower's death. The estate has no obligation to repay. Notify NSLSC with a death certificate; no further action required. Provincial loan servicers must be notified separately.
Canada Student Loans survive bankruptcy until seven years after leaving school. After seven years, student loans can be discharged in bankruptcy. Before the seven-year mark, a court can reduce this to five years for undue hardship cases. RAP is generally a better long-term solution than bankruptcy for struggling borrowers.
