Step 1: Log Into CRA My Account
- Go to canada.ca/my-cra-account
- Sign in using your CRA user ID and password, or log in through your bank (sign-in partner)
- If you don't have a CRA My Account, register at the same URL — you'll need your SIN, date of birth, and information from a recent tax return
Step 2: Find Your TFSA Room
- Once logged in, look for the "RRSP and TFSA" section on the home page, or use the top navigation
- Click on "Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)"
- You will see your "TFSA contribution room" — this is the amount the CRA has calculated based on reported data up to the end of the previous calendar year
Understanding the CRA Number: The Important Caveat
The CRA's TFSA room figure is based on information reported to them by financial institutions — which is typically for the previous calendar year. If you are checking in mid-2025, the CRA's number reflects your room as of January 1, 2025. It does NOT account for any contributions you have made in 2025.
Always subtract your 2025 contributions from the CRA figure. If CRA shows $15,000 of room and you've already contributed $7,000 in 2025, your true available room is $8,000 — not $15,000.
Adjusting the CRA Figure: The Formula
Your true available room = CRA room figure − contributions made in the current calendar year + withdrawals made in the previous calendar year (already included by CRA)
Example:
- CRA shows: $22,000 available room (as of Jan 1, 2025)
- You contributed $5,000 in February 2025
- Your true room today: $22,000 − $5,000 = $17,000
What If My Room Looks Wrong?
If the CRA's room figure seems too low, possible reasons include:
- A financial institution reported a contribution that you don't recognize — could be a transfer incorrectly coded as a contribution
- A prior-year over-contribution that was assessed and deducted
- A transfer that was processed as a withdrawal + contribution instead of a direct transfer
- An institution that hasn't reported your withdrawal yet (data can lag)
You can call the CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281 to request a detailed TFSA transaction history to reconcile discrepancies.
Keeping Your Own Records: The Best Practice
The CRA My Account is a useful reference, but it is a lagging indicator. The most reliable approach is to keep your own TFSA ledger:
| Date | Institution | Type | Amount | Running Balance |
| Jan 1, 2025 | — | Room restored (CRA) | +$95,000 | $95,000 |
| Feb 15, 2025 | Questrade | Contribution | −$7,000 | $88,000 |
| Jun 1, 2025 | EQ Bank | Contribution | −$5,000 | $83,000 |
