Presto is the smart card system for transit in most of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), Ottawa, and parts of GO Transit. Using Presto vs. cash saves money through several mechanisms:
Children under 12 ride free on TTC with a paying adult. Seniors (65+) and youth (13–19) qualify for discounted Presto fares. Students with valid post-secondary ID may qualify at some agencies.
Vancouver's Compass card system (TransLink) has a zone-based fare structure. Living and working in Zone 1 (Vancouver proper) costs significantly less than commuting from Zone 2 (Burnaby, Richmond) or Zone 3 (Surrey, Langley, Coquitlam).
Toronto's Fair Pass program offers a $143.75/month TTC pass to low-income Torontonians (versus the regular $156) plus access to free TTC passes during financial hardship. Eligibility based on household income — apply through toronto.ca/fairpass.
TransLink offers the U-Pass BC for post-secondary students. Several municipalities offer transit subsidies for seniors and low-income residents. Call 211 for specific programs in your area.
Calgary Transit offers a 50% discount on monthly passes for qualifying low-income residents through the City's Low Income Transit Pass program ($56/month vs. $112). Applications through the City of Calgary's social assistance office.
STM offers reduced-rate monthly passes for low-income Montrealers (CAM — Carte Accompagnement Métro). Students and seniors also receive discounted passes.
Edmonton Transit's LIFTPASS program offers low-income passes at approximately half price for qualifying households.
Many Canadian employers offer transit subsidy programs. If yours doesn't, ask — it's often a low-cost benefit for employers:
