Ontario Trillium Benefit 2025

The Ontario Trillium Benefit combines three provincial credits into one monthly payment. Find out how much you could receive and whether you qualify.

What Is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is a monthly provincial benefit that combines three refundable tax credits to help low- and moderate-income Ontario residents with energy costs, property taxes, and sales taxes:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do renters qualify for the OEPTC property tax component?
Yes. Renters qualify for the property tax component of the OEPTC. The CRA considers 20% of your annual rent paid as an equivalent to property tax for this purpose. Report your total rent paid for the year on Schedule ON-BEN. Only rent for principal residences qualifies — not student residence fees, lodging, or commercial spaces.
What if I lived in Ontario for only part of the year?
You must be an Ontario resident on December 31 of the tax year to claim the OTB. If you moved to Ontario during the year and were there on December 31, you can claim based on rent and property tax paid while living in Ontario only. If you left Ontario before December 31, you are not eligible for the OTB for that year.
Is the OTB taxable income?
No. The Ontario Trillium Benefit is tax-free. It is not reported as income on your tax return and does not affect your eligibility for federal income-tested benefits.
