The CWB is a refundable tax credit for low-income workers. Find out if you qualify, how much you can get, and when advance payments arrive.
The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a refundable federal tax credit designed to support low-income workers. It replaced the Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) in 2019 and was significantly enhanced to put more money in the pockets of working Canadians who earn modest incomes.
The CWB has two components:
One of the CWB's best features is that you can receive up to half of your estimated benefit in advance payments throughout the year, rather than waiting for tax season.
| Situation | Maximum Basic CWB | Disability Supplement |
|---|---|---|
| Single individuals | $1,518 | $784 |
| Families (with spouse/dependants) | $2,616 | $784 |
The amounts above are the 2024 tax year figures (claimed on your 2024 return filed in 2025). Amounts are indexed to inflation each year.
| Situation | Benefit Starts At | Maximum Reached At | Phase-Out Begins | Zero At |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | $3,000 earned income | ~$13,194 | $23,495 | ~$35,095 |
| Families | $3,000 earned income | ~$17,522 | $26,805 | ~$45,934 |
Self-employed workers qualify! If you're a freelancer, contractor, or run your own business, your net self-employment income counts as earned income for CWB purposes. File Schedule 6 with your tax return to claim it.
Starting in 2023, the CRA automatically issues advance CWB payments to eligible Canadians. You no longer need to apply — the CRA uses your prior year tax return to estimate your CWB and sends advance payments automatically.

When your CWB advance payment arrives, make sure it lands in an account with no fees. KOHO is free, earns cash back, and has tools to help you budget your benefits. Use code 45ET55JSYA for a bonus.
Get KOHO Free — Use Code 45ET55JSYAThe CWB is claimed when you file your annual federal income tax return. Here's what to do:
Download and complete Schedule 6 (Canada Workers Benefit) as part of your T1 tax return. Tax software like TurboTax, H&R Block, or Wealthsimple Tax will automatically include this schedule if you're eligible.
File by April 30 (or June 15 if self-employed). If you miss the deadline, you'll still get the CWB when you file, but late-filing penalties may apply if you owe other taxes.
After filing, log into CRA My Account to see your CWB entitlement and confirm any advance payments issued during the year.
Important: If you received advance CWB payments that exceed your actual entitlement (because your income ended up higher than estimated), you'll need to repay the excess when you file your return. This is reconciled automatically on your tax assessment.
