Canada Workers Benefit 2025: Who Qualifies?

The CWB is a refundable tax credit for low-income workers. Find out if you qualify, how much you can get, and when advance payments arrive.

What Is the Canada Workers Benefit?

The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a refundable federal tax credit designed to support low-income workers. It replaced the Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) in 2019 and was significantly enhanced to put more money in the pockets of working Canadians who earn modest incomes.

The CWB has two components:

One of the CWB's best features is that you can receive up to half of your estimated benefit in advance payments throughout the year, rather than waiting for tax season.

Self-employed workers qualify! If you're a freelancer, contractor, or run your own business, your net self-employment income counts as earned income for CWB purposes. File Schedule 6 with your tax return to claim it.

Starting in 2023, the CRA automatically issues advance CWB payments to eligible Canadians. You no longer need to apply — the CRA uses your prior year tax return to estimate your CWB and sends advance payments automatically.

How to Claim the CWB

The CWB is claimed when you file your annual federal income tax return. Here's what to do:

Step 1: Complete Schedule 6

Download and complete Schedule 6 (Canada Workers Benefit) as part of your T1 tax return. Tax software like TurboTax, H&R Block, or Wealthsimple Tax will automatically include this schedule if you're eligible.

Step 2: File your tax return on time

File by April 30 (or June 15 if self-employed). If you miss the deadline, you'll still get the CWB when you file, but late-filing penalties may apply if you owe other taxes.

Step 3: Check CRA My Account

After filing, log into CRA My Account to see your CWB entitlement and confirm any advance payments issued during the year.

Important: If you received advance CWB payments that exceed your actual entitlement (because your income ended up higher than estimated), you'll need to repay the excess when you file your return. This is reconciled automatically on your tax assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CWB the same as the WITB?
The CWB replaced the Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) in 2019. The CWB is more generous — the maximum amounts are higher and the phase-out thresholds are wider, meaning more low-income workers benefit. The disability supplement was also enhanced.
Can both spouses claim the CWB?
No. Only one spouse or common-law partner can claim the family CWB amount per household. The higher-earning partner typically claims it, but families can choose which partner makes the claim for optimal tax planning. Only one CWB is issued per family unit.
Does investment income affect CWB eligibility?
Your adjusted net income includes most types of income, including investment income. However, the phase-out is based on total net income — so significant investment or rental income can reduce or eliminate your CWB even if your employment income is low.
What is the CWB disability supplement?
The disability supplement adds up to $784 to your CWB if you're eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). You must have an approved T2201 form on file with CRA. If both spouses have approved T2201s, each can claim the disability supplement separately.
