The Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) is free government money deposited directly into your child's RESP. The basic CESG is 20% of annual contributions up to $2,500 — meaning $500 per year in free grants. Lower-income families may receive additional CESG of 10–20% on the first $500 contributed. Over 18 years, the lifetime maximum is $7,200 in basic CESG.
Lower-income families may also qualify for the Canada Learning Bond — a separate grant of up to $2,000 that requires no contributions. If you qualify, simply opening an RESP triggers the bond. Income thresholds change annually — check canada.ca for current eligibility.
To receive the full $7,200 in basic CESG, contribute $2,500/year for 14.4 years. Start from birth and contribute monthly ($208/month) to spread the cost and build the habit early. Families who start at birth and contribute consistently receive the most from the CESG program.
Set a savings goal in KOHO and transfer $208/month to your RESP. Cash back helps fund contributions too.
