Quarterly CAI payments for eligible Canadians in backstop provinces. 2026 amounts by province and family size, with rural supplement details.
The Climate Action Incentive (CAI) payment — also called the Canada Carbon Rebate — returns carbon pricing revenue directly to Canadians in provinces where the federal fuel charge applies. The CAI is delivered as a quarterly tax-free payment and does not need to be applied for separately — you're automatically enrolled when you file your annual tax return. For 2026, CAI payments continue quarterly in April, July, October, and January.
The federal fuel charge (carbon tax) applies in provinces that have not implemented their own carbon pricing system meeting the federal benchmark. As of 2026, CAI payments are made to residents of:
Residents of British Columbia, Quebec, and the territories are not eligible for federal CAI payments because these provinces/territories have their own carbon pricing systems.

CAI payments are delivered quarterly — in April, July, October, and January of each benefit year. If you have direct deposit set up in CRA My Account, payments arrive directly in your bank account on the scheduled date. Without direct deposit, you receive a cheque by mail, which takes longer to arrive.
The benefit year for CAI runs April to March. The April 2026 payment is based on your 2024 tax return (filed in 2025). The April 2027 payment will be based on your 2025 tax return (filed in 2026) — which is why filing your tax return on time matters even if you owe nothing.
Residents of rural and small communities receive an additional 20% on top of the base CAI payment. This acknowledges that rural Canadians often have fewer alternatives to driving and may face higher fuel costs relative to their income. To claim the rural supplement, check the box on your tax return indicating you live outside a census metropolitan area (CMA) or census agglomeration (CA) as of December 31 of the tax year.
PEI residents automatically receive the rural supplement — they do not need to check the box, as all of PEI is treated as rural for CAI purposes.
