Open KOHO — Code: 45ET55JSYAThe standard tap/contactless limit in Canada is $250 per transaction for physical debit and credit cards (Interac Flash and Visa/Mastercard contactless). Yes. Apple Pay and Google Pay are generally considered safer than using your physical card because they use tokenization — your actual card number is never transmitted to the merchant. Instead, a one-time device-specific number (token) is used. Additionally, every Apple Pay or Google Pay transaction requires biometric authentication (Face ID, fingerprint), making unauthorized use extremely difficult.
The contactless payment symbol looks like a sideways Wi-Fi icon: four curved lines of increasing size, similar to radio waves. You'll see it on compatible payment terminals and on contactless-enabled debit and credit cards. When you see this symbol on a terminal, you can tap your card or phone.
Contactless payment acceptance is nearly universal in Canada as of 2025. Canada is one of the world's leaders in contactless payment adoption. Most grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, restaurants, transit systems (TTC, OC Transpo, TransLink), and retail locations accept tap payments. A small number of businesses (some rural, some older terminals) may still require chip-and-PIN.
