When your credit score is damaged, companies offering quick fixes can seem appealing. In Canada, the credit repair industry is loosely regulated and filled with both legitimate services and outright scams. Understanding the difference can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars — and prevent you from making your situation worse.
Only two categories of negative information can be removed from your credit report before their natural expiry date:
That is it. Accurate negative information — real missed payments, actual collections, a genuine bankruptcy — cannot be legally removed before it expires. Any company claiming otherwise is either misleading you or proposing something illegal.
A legitimate credit service in Canada will do some combination of the following:
You can do all of these things yourself, for free. The legitimate credit repair companies are charging you for convenience and expertise. That can be reasonable if your situation is complex, but there is nothing they can do that you cannot do yourself with some effort.
Watch out for companies that:
Some fraudulent companies suggest creating a new credit profile using a fabricated Social Insurance Number or Employer Identification Number. This is not only illegal — it is a federal crime in Canada. People who do this can face criminal fraud charges. No legitimate credit service will ever suggest this.
Some companies dispute every item on your credit report — accurate or not — hoping some get removed due to verification delays. When accurate information is temporarily removed, your score rises, and the company points to this as success. But the information is eventually re-reported, your score drops again, and you have wasted money on fees. This strategy also creates a record of excessive disputes that can flag your file.
Non-profit credit counselling agencies — like the Credit Counselling Society of Canada — offer free or low-cost services including budgeting help, creditor negotiation, and debt management plans. These are legitimate organizations focused on your financial wellbeing, not your credit score.
For-profit credit repair companies charge monthly fees (often $50 to $150 or more) for services that range from useful to fraudulent. If you want professional help, a non-profit credit counsellor is almost always the better choice in Canada.
Under Canadian consumer protection laws, you have the right to dispute inaccurate information on your credit report for free. You do not need a third party to do this. Both Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada are required to investigate disputes and correct confirmed errors. If a company tries to charge you for this service, decline and do it yourself.
