RRSP and TFSA Strategy for Engineers

Unlike pension-covered public servants, most private-sector engineers accumulate full RRSP room (18% of prior year income). At a $120,000 salary, that is $21,600 in new RRSP room annually. Engineers should maximize RRSP contributions, especially in high-earning senior years, and use RRSP to smooth income between high and low earning years such as maternity leave, sabbaticals, or consulting gaps. Max TFSA annually for tax-free compounding and take advantage of group RRSP matching if available from your employer.

Group RRSP Matching

Many engineering firms offer RRSP or DPSP matching of 3-6% of salary. This is free money. Always contribute at least enough to capture the full employer match. On a $120,000 salary, a 5% match equals $6,000 per year in free contributions compounding tax-sheltered for decades.

Consulting Engineer: Incorporation

Senior engineers moving into independent consulting often incorporate a professional corporation (PC) or CCPC. Benefits include the Small Business Deduction rate of approximately 12.2% in Ontario versus a 53.5% personal marginal rate, ability to defer personal income, and income-splitting with family members. Engineering professional corporations must be licensed and controlled by a registered P.Eng.
