What Is the GST/HST Credit?

The GST/HST credit is a tax-free quarterly payment made by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to help individuals and families with low to moderate income offset the GST or HST they pay on everyday purchases. It's automatically calculated when you file your income tax return.

How to Apply — Especially for Newcomers

Filing your tax return is your application. The CRA automatically determines if you're eligible for the GST/HST credit when you file your annual income tax return (T1). You don't need a separate application if you've filed a return.

For newcomers who have just arrived: File a tax return even if you had no Canadian income in your first year. This activates your eligibility for the GST credit and other benefits (Canada Child Benefit, etc.).

1
File your first Canadian income tax return (T1) with the CRA — even if you had low or no income
2
If you haven't filed yet but have just arrived: use RC151 form (GST/HST Credit Application for Individuals Who Become Residents of Canada) to apply immediately
3
Set up direct deposit in My CRA Account to receive payments automatically in your bank account
4
Payments start the payment period after CRA receives your application or return

Other Benefits That Come With Filing

Filing your tax return (even with no income) unlocks additional federal and provincial benefits:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can newcomers to Canada receive the GST/HST credit?
Yes. As a new resident of Canada (including permanent residents, temporary workers, and international students), you may be eligible for the GST/HST credit from your first year in Canada. File a Canadian tax return even if you had no income, or use form RC151 to apply as a new resident without waiting to file a return.
How do I get my GST rebate by direct deposit?
Sign into (or register for) My Account at CRA's website (canada.ca/my-cra-account) and set up direct deposit with your Canadian bank account information. You can also call 1-800-959-8281 and provide your bank details. Once set up, your quarterly GST payments will be deposited automatically.
What is the GST credit amount for a single person in 2025?
For the 2025 benefit year (July 2025 – June 2026), a single person can receive up to $519 annually ($129.75 per quarter), provided their 2024 income is under approximately $54,704. The credit phases out gradually above this income level.
Do I need to apply separately for the GST credit?
Usually not. When you file your annual income tax return, the CRA automatically determines your GST/HST credit eligibility and notifies you of your entitlement. If you're a new resident who hasn't yet filed a return, complete Form RC151 to apply immediately rather than waiting.
Is the GST/HST credit taxable income?
No. The GST/HST credit is completely tax-free. It does not count as income and is not reported on your tax return. It also does not affect your eligibility for other income-tested benefits like the Canada Child Benefit or Old Age Security.
What happens if I miss a GST payment date?
If your payment doesn't arrive, wait 10 business days after the scheduled date before contacting the CRA. Common reasons for missed payments: your bank account information needs updating, you haven't filed your tax return yet, or your address hasn't been updated with the CRA. Sign into My CRA Account to check your status.
