How to calculate credit utilization

Credit utilization = total revolving balance ÷ total revolving credit limit × 100

For example, a $2,500 combined balance across cards with $10,000 in combined limits produces an estimated utilization of 25%. You can calculate the overall ratio and also review each account separately.

Why use a 29% target?

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada advises trying to use less than 30% of available credit. This calculator uses 29% as a simple planning threshold. Read the current guidance directly from the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.

What this estimate does not tell you

Credit scores can reflect payment history, account age, credit mix, inquiries and other information. Lower utilization does not guarantee approval, a particular score, or a score increase. Confirm balances, limits and reporting details with your financial institution.
