What is credit utilization?

Credit utilization compares revolving balances with available revolving credit limits. For example, a $1,500 balance across $5,000 of limits represents 30% utilization. Results can vary as balances and limits change.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada advises trying to use less than 30% of available credit. That is general guidance, not a promise that reaching a particular ratio will change a credit score.
