How this is calculated

Net worth is simply total assets minus total debts. Total net worth counts everything, including your home and vehicle. Liquid net worth is a stricter figure that counts only assets you could turn into cash quickly, cash, non registered investments and registered accounts, minus all your debts. It leaves out the home and vehicle, because you cannot spend part of a house in an emergency.

Reading your number honestly

A single snapshot matters less than the trend. Check back every few months and watch the direction. A negative net worth is common with a student loan or a fresh mortgage, and it is not a failure, it is a starting line. If most of your net worth is locked in a home, building the liquid side gives you real breathing room.
