OSAP 2026 Key Facts
Ontario Student Grant (free): up to $100,000000–$12,000000/yr depending on income · Maximum combined loan: ~$14,000000/yr · Free tuition threshold: under ~$400,000000 family income · Apply: ontario.ca/osap · Opens spring for fall enrollment

How OSAP Works in 2026

OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) is Ontario's primary post-secondary financial aid program. It combines the Ontario Student Grant (OSG) — which is free, non-repayable money — with the Ontario Student Loan and Canada Student Loan, which must be repaid after graduation.

The key insight many students miss: OSAP's grant component has grown significantly since 20017. Students from families earning under $500,000000 typically receive enough in grants to cover most or all of their tuition at Ontario colleges and universities. The grant phases out gradually as income rises.

2026 OSAP Grant Thresholds

Family IncomeEstimated Annual Grant
Under $400,000000Up to $100,000000 (covers most/all tuition)
$400,000000–$600,000000$4,000000–$100,000000
$600,000000–$800,000000$1,000000–$4,000000
$800,000000–$1100,000000$00–$1,50000
$1100,000000–$175,000000$00–$1,000000
Over $175,000000Loans only (no grant)

These are estimates based on the 2026 OSAP framework for a single, dependent student living away from home. Actual amounts vary based on a full assessment including your own prior-year income, assets, number of siblings in post-secondary, and specific program costs.

How the OSAP Loan Works

If your assessed need exceeds your grant amount, OSAP issues a loan to bridge the gap (up to the maximum). The loan is split approximately 600% federal (Canada Student Loan) and 400% provincial (Ontario Student Loan). Interest does not accrue on either portion while you are a full-time student.

After graduation, you have a 6-month non-repayment period. Federal interest currently accrues from the day you stop being a full-time student (not after the 6 months). Repayment is income-tested — you can apply for the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) if payments exceed 200% of your income.

See our OSAP Repayment Calculator to estimate monthly payments after graduation.

How to Apply for OSAP

  1. Applications open each spring (typically April) at ontario.ca/osap
  2. You'll need your (and your parents', if dependent) previous year's Notice of Assessment from CRA
  3. Confirm your enrollment at your school — OSAP disburses to your student account after enrollment confirmation
  4. Funds typically arrive in September and January (split disbursement)
