PWD Designation Criteria

To qualify for the PWD designation you must:

Be 18 years of age or older
Be a BC resident
Have a severe mental or physical impairment that in the opinion of a medical practitioner or nurse practitioner is likely to continue for at least 2 years
Have the impairment directly and significantly restrict your ability to perform daily living activities either continuously or periodically for extended periods
As a result of restrictions, require significant help or supervision to perform daily living activities

BC has significantly higher asset limits than many other provinces, and the $100,000 cash exemption was a major improvement for recipients. RDSP balances remain fully exempt.

Employment Earnings Exemption

BC PWD recipients have a generous $1,000/month employment earnings exemption — the first $1,000 earned does not reduce benefits. Earnings above $1,000 reduce the benefit dollar-for-dollar. This encourages part-time employment and gradual workforce re-entry without penalizing work attempts.

Applying for BC PWD
