The $50,000 Lifetime RESP Limit Explained

The Government of Canada sets a lifetime RESP contribution limit of $50,000 per beneficiary (the child). This is a hard cap — contributions above $50,000 are considered "over-contributions" and are subject to a penalty tax of 1% per month on the excess amount.

The $50,000 limit applies regardless of how many RESPs exist for that child. If a child has both a family RESP from parents and an individual RESP from grandparents, the combined contributions from both accounts cannot exceed $50,000 lifetime.

Key fact: There is no annual RESP contribution limit. You could theoretically deposit all $50,000 in the first year. However, doing so would only earn $500 in CESG that year rather than spreading contributions to earn $500/year over 18 years (up to $7,200 total). Spreading contributions is almost always the better strategy.

CESG and the $2,500/Year Threshold

While you can contribute any amount annually up to the $50,000 lifetime cap, the Canada Education Savings Grant only applies to the first $2,500 contributed per year per beneficiary:

This means there's no CESG benefit to contributing more than $2,500/year — unless you have carry-forward room from previous years.

CESG Carry-Forward Room

Every year a child exists without receiving the full CESG, unused room carries forward. The maximum CESG you can receive in any single year is $1,000 (on $5,000 of contributions) — double the normal amount. This allows families who started late to catch up, albeit slowly.

Age StartedCatch-Up Years AvailableTotal Catch-Up Potential
BirthUp to 18 years$7,200 max (standard)
Age 513 years left + 5 years carry-forward$7,200 still achievable
Age 108 years at $1,000/yr$8,000 — exceeds lifetime cap of $7,200
Age 144 years × $1,000/yr$4,000 max possible

Annual RESP Contribution Strategy

Even though there's no annual contribution limit, the optimal strategy depends on your goals:

Strategy 1: Maximize CESG ($208/month)

Contribute exactly $2,500/year ($208.33/month). This earns the full $500 CESG annually. After 18 years: $45,000 contributed + $9,000 CESG = well positioned with years of growth.

Strategy 2: Lump Sum at Birth

Some families contribute a large lump sum early (e.g., $14,000 at birth) plus $2,500/year for the remaining years. This maximizes compound growth on the initial deposit, though it doesn't earn more CESG.

Strategy 3: Catch-Up Contributions

If you started late, contribute $5,000/year to earn $1,000 CESG annually while also filling unused room faster. You can catch up both grant room and contribution room this way.

RESP Over-Contribution Rules

Warning: Contributions exceeding $50,000 lifetime are subject to a 1% penalty tax per month. The penalty applies until the excess is withdrawn.

Over-contributions can happen when multiple people contribute to separate RESPs for the same child — e.g., parents have one RESP and grandparents set up another. The $50,000 limit is per beneficiary, not per account.

To fix an over-contribution:

  1. Withdraw the excess amount from the RESP
  2. Your original contributions are returned tax-free
  3. File the appropriate tax forms with the CRA
  4. Ensure all contributors track cumulative deposits

For families with multiple RESP accounts, the subscriber should track total contributions across all plans to avoid exceeding $50,000.

RESP Contribution Limits by Age — What's Possible

Child's AgeMax Remaining RoomYears of CESG LeftRemaining CESG Potential
0$50,00018$7,200
3$50,00015$7,200
5$50,00013$7,200
10$50,0008$7,200 (with catch-up)
14$50,0004~$4,000 max
17$50,0001 (restrictions apply)~$500

Note: CESG stops being paid at the end of the calendar year in which the beneficiary turns 17. There are also restrictions for children turning 16 or 17 — at least $2,000 must have been contributed in a prior year OR at least $100 must have been contributed in each of at least 4 years before age 16.

Provincial RESP Grants (Additional on Top of Federal)

Some provinces offer additional education savings incentives on top of the federal CESG:

These provincial grants are separate from and in addition to the federal CESG, and do not count against contribution limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an annual RESP contribution limit? +
No. There is no annual limit. You can contribute up to the $50,000 lifetime cap at any pace. However, CESG is only paid on the first $2,500 contributed per year, so there's no grant benefit to contributing more than $2,500/year (unless you have carry-forward room).
Can two RESPs exist for the same child? +
Yes, multiple RESPs can exist for the same beneficiary, but the combined lifetime contributions across all plans cannot exceed $50,000. Both parents and grandparents need to coordinate to avoid over-contributions.
What is the RESP carry-forward rule? +
Unused CESG room carries forward from year to year. You can earn up to $1,000 CESG in a single year (by contributing $5,000) to catch up on previous years where you didn't contribute or didn't contribute the full $2,500.
Does unused RESP contribution room expire? +
The $50,000 lifetime room doesn't expire while the RESP is open, but CESG room stops accumulating after the child turns 17, and CESG can no longer be earned after age 17 (with restrictions starting at 16).
