OTF pension, salary grid, and smart money strategies for Ontario teachers.
Ontario teacher salaries are set by collective agreements between school boards and the teacher unions (ETFO, OECTA, OSSTF). The salary grid is determined by qualifications (categories A through D+ based on university credits) and experience (0–10 years). Here are approximate ranges for 2026:
| Category | Year 0 | Year 5 | Year 10 (Max) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category A (3-yr degree) | $44,000 | $63,000 | $84,000 |
| Category B (4-yr degree) | $48,000 | $68,000 | $90,000 |
| Category C (Honours + 1 Additional) | $52,000 | $73,000 | $96,000 |
| Category D+ (Masters/PhD) | $56,000 | $78,000 | $106,000 |
Additionally, department heads, vice-principals, and principals receive allowances on top of grid salary.
The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) is one of the largest and best-funded pension plans in the world. Teachers contribute approximately 11.5% of earnings up to the CPP maximum, and 13.1% above it. The plan provides a defined benefit of 2% × best-5-years salary × years of service.
A Category D teacher retiring at age 55 with 30 years of service and a best-5 salary of $102,000 receives approximately $61,200/year, inflation-indexed, for life. This is equivalent in value to a $1.5–$1.8M RRSP depending on inflation assumptions.
Because you have a rich pension, your RRSP room is reduced by a Pension Adjustment (PA) reported on your T4. If your PA is $15,000, and you earned $95,000, your RRSP contribution room is 18% × $95,000 = $17,100 minus $15,000 PA = only $2,100 new room. Most teachers have limited RRSP room — prioritize the TFSA instead.
With a guaranteed pension, teachers can afford to take slightly more risk in their personal investment portfolio. The TFSA becomes the primary savings vehicle given limited RRSP room. Consider:
