Union Dues & Professional Membership Deduction Canada 2026

Box 44 on your T4, Schedule 9, and professional dues paid outside payroll — everything you need to claim this often-missed deduction.

Union dues and professional membership fees are fully deductible against employment income for Canadian taxpayers. Whether your dues are deducted through payroll (reported in Box 44 of your T4) or paid directly by you, the CRA allows you to deduct the full amount from your income. For many unionized employees and licensed professionals, this deduction saves hundreds of dollars per year.

Box 44 on Your T4 — Union Dues Through Payroll

If you pay union dues through payroll deductions, your employer reports the total annual amount in Box 44 of your T4 slip. This is the most common way union dues are reported. The amount in Box 44 flows directly to Line 21200 of your T1 return as a deduction from employment income.

Most certified tax software automatically picks up the Box 44 amount from your T4 data (especially if you use Auto-fill My Return through CRA My Account). Double-check that the Box 44 amount appears on Line 21200 of your return — it's occasionally missed when entering T4 data manually.

Professional Dues Not on a T4 — Schedule 9

Many professionals pay dues directly to their regulatory body or professional association — these do not appear on a T4. Examples include annual membership fees paid by:

These amounts are claimed on Schedule 9 (Donations and Gifts is not the right schedule — look for the professional dues section on your T1, Line 21200). In tax software, there is usually a separate field for "dues paid directly" versus Box 44 dues. Keep your annual membership renewal receipts or invoices.

What Qualifies as Deductible Dues

The CRA allows deductions for annual dues paid to maintain a professional status that is required to keep your employment or carry on your profession. Specifically deductible:

What Is NOT Deductible

Parity Committee and Other Special Dues

In Quebec, workers in certain industries pay dues to a parity committee (comité paritaire) that administers collective agreements. These are treated similarly to union dues and are deductible on Line 21200. Quebec-specific professional dues paid to Ordre professionnel bodies are also deductible.

How Much Can You Save?

Example: Unionized Teacher in Ontario

Annual union dues (OSSTF or ETFO): ~$1,400/year
Ontario teacher's marginal federal rate: 26% (on income around $100,000)
Ontario provincial rate: ~11.16%
Combined marginal rate: ~37%
Tax savings: $1,400 × 37% = $518/year

Example: Registered Nurse in BC

BCCNM (regulatory body) annual fee: ~$680
BCNU union dues: ~$1,200/year
Total deductible dues: $1,880
Combined marginal rate: ~33%
Tax savings: $1,880 × 33% = $620/year

Line 21200 on Your T1 Return

All union and professional dues — whether from Box 44 or paid directly — are entered on Line 21200 of your T1 return. This is in the "Other deductions" section, just below the RRSP deduction. Line 21200 is a deduction from income (not a credit), meaning it reduces your taxable income dollar-for-dollar and saves tax at your marginal rate.

Missed this deduction in prior years? If you forgot to claim union or professional dues in a prior year (up to 10 years back), you can request a T1 adjustment through CRA My Account. You'll need receipts or T4 slips showing the dues paid. The CRA will reassess your return and issue a refund for the additional deduction.

Employer-Paid Dues — Taxable Benefit

If your employer pays your professional dues on your behalf, this is generally a taxable employment benefit — it must be included in your income (it may appear in Box 40 of your T4). However, you can then deduct the same amount as a professional dues deduction on Line 21200, resulting in a wash (zero net tax impact). Some employers handle this as a taxable benefit on the T4 and the employee claims the offsetting deduction.

Keep your receipts: The CRA may request proof of dues paid during a review. Keep annual renewal notices, receipts, or bank statements showing the payment for at least 6 years. For Box 44 amounts from your T4, the T4 itself is your documentation.
