Alberta has rebranded its provincial immigration program as the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). With no provincial income tax on the first $21,003 and the lowest personal income tax rates among major Canadian provinces, Alberta attracts workers and families looking to maximize their take-home pay. The AAIP offers several distinct streams for workers across industries from tech to agriculture.
Why Alberta? Key Financial Advantages
- No provincial sales tax (PST) — only 5% GST applies
- Lowest combined income tax rates of major Canadian provinces
- Affordable housing compared to Vancouver and Toronto
- Strong job market in energy, tech, construction, and healthcare
- High average wages, especially in Calgary and Fort McMurray

Living in Calgary vs. Edmonton
Alberta's two major cities each have unique characteristics for newcomers:
- Calgary: Canada's energy capital, strong finance sector, head offices for oil sands companies. Growing tech scene. Higher average wages. More expensive housing than Edmonton.
- Edmonton: Provincial capital, strong government and healthcare sector, University of Alberta, growing tech and startup scene. More affordable housing than Calgary.
