The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a federal program that helps homeowners make their homes more energy-efficient by providing grants of up to $5,600 for eligible energy retrofits, plus up to $600 to cover the cost of a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide energy audit.

What Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant?

The grant is tied to an EnerGuide home evaluation. A licensed energy advisor visits your home before renovations to assess its current energy performance, then returns after improvements to confirm the upgrades were completed and measure the improvement. This two-step evaluation unlocks the grant funding.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, you must:

• Be a Canadian homeowner (including single-family homes, semi-detached, row houses, small multi-unit residential buildings up to three units, mobile homes on a permanent foundation, and mixed-use buildings where you occupy one unit)
• Own and occupy the home as your primary residence
• Have not previously received a grant under this program for the same home
• Complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation before starting eligible upgrades

Renters and landlords of larger buildings are not eligible for this specific program (though other programs may exist for them).

Eligible Upgrades and Grant Amounts

Grant amounts depend on the type of upgrade and the improvement in energy performance. Here are the key categories:

Insulation

• Attic/ceiling insulation: up to $3,500
• Wall insulation: up to $3,000
• Basement/crawlspace insulation: up to $1,000
• Exposed floor: up to $700

Air Sealing

• Up to $1,000 for reducing air leakage

Renewable Energy

The EnerGuide Audit: $600 Grant

In addition to retrofit grants, the program covers up to $600 toward the cost of your EnerGuide home evaluations — typically $300–$600 per evaluation (you need two: pre- and post-retrofit). This effectively makes the audit free or very low cost for most homeowners.

An EnerGuide evaluation is performed by a Natural Resources Canada-registered energy advisor. They assess your home's insulation, heating system, windows, air tightness, and more, then generate an EnerGuide rating (a score from 0–100 for your home's energy performance).

How to Apply — Step by Step

1. Register on the Greener Homes portal at canada.ca/greener-homes
2. Book a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation — find a registered energy advisor through the portal or NRCan's directory
3. Receive your pre-retrofit report — the advisor gives you a list of recommended upgrades
4. Complete eligible upgrades — hire qualified contractors and keep all receipts and invoices
5. Book a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation — the advisor returns to confirm upgrades and measure improvement
6. Submit your grant application — upload invoices, the post-retrofit report, and supporting documents through the portal
7. Receive your grant — payments typically arrive within 6–8 weeks of approval

Combining with Provincial Programs

Many provinces have their own energy efficiency rebate programs that stack with the federal Greener Homes Grant:

• Ontario: Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate Plus, Toronto's Home Energy Loan Program (HELP)
• BC: CleanBC Better Homes program (rebates up to $16,000 for heat pumps)
• Alberta: Energy Efficiency Alberta rebates
• Quebec: Rénoclimat program (up to $5,000 in rebates)

Greener Homes Loan (Interest-Free)

In addition to the grant, the Canada Greener Homes Loan offers an interest-free loan of up to $40,000 repayable over 10 years for eligible deep retrofits. This is separate from the grant and can be combined with it. To qualify, you must complete a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation and plan upgrades that achieve a meaningful improvement in your EnerGuide rating.
