How the Application Process Works

Step 1 — Pre-retrofit EnerGuide assessment: Book a Registered Energy Advisor through Natural Resources Canada's directory. The assessment ($600–$1,000) gives your home an energy rating and identifies upgrade opportunities. The grant covers 50% of this cost (up to $600).

Step 2 — Complete eligible upgrades: Use licensed contractors. Keep all invoices and receipts. Upgrades must be completed within 18 months of the pre-retrofit assessment.

Step 3 — Post-retrofit assessment: Your Energy Advisor returns to verify the upgrades and update your EnerGuide rating. This confirms grant eligibility.

Step 4 — Submit application: Apply through the Canada Greener Homes portal with your pre and post assessment reports and contractor invoices. Grant paid directly to applicant.

Stacking with Provincial Programs

The federal Greener Homes Grant can be combined with provincial programs in most cases. BC Hydro offers up to $6,000 for heat pump installation; Ontario's HER+ program provides additional rebates for qualifying homeowners; Nova Scotia's EfficiencyOne program offers significant additional support. Stacked incentives can make heat pump and insulation upgrades nearly cost-neutral in some provinces.
