How the CCB Is Calculated

The Canada Child Benefit is calculated using a formula based on your adjusted family net income (AFNI). Here's how it works for the 2025–2026 benefit year (based on 2024 income):

Step 1: Maximum benefit

The maximum benefit per child per year is:

Child AgeMax Annual BenefitMax Monthly
Under 6 years$7,787$648.92
6–17 years$6,570$547.50
Child Disability Benefit (add-on)$3,173$264.42

Step 2: Phase-out threshold

If your family net income is below $36,502, you receive the full maximum benefit. Above that, the benefit is reduced based on the number of children:

Number of ChildrenPhase-Out Rate (First Tier)Phase-Out Rate (Second Tier, over $79,087)
1 child13.5%5.7%
2 children19.0%8.0%
3 children22.0%9.5%
4+ children23.0%10.0%

Example: A family with 2 children under 6 and a net income of $60,000 would receive approximately $13,610/year minus 19% × ($60,000 − $36,502) = $13,610 − $4,465 = roughly $9,145/year, or about $762/month.

Tips to Maximize Your CCB

1. File your taxes every year — even with zero income

The CRA requires both spouses/partners to file taxes annually to continue receiving the CCB. If you miss a year, your payments will stop. File as soon as possible after February each year.

2. Update your marital status promptly

If you separate, divorce, or start living with a new partner, notify the CRA within 90 days. This can significantly change your CCB amount, as the benefit is calculated on family net income.

3. Apply immediately after birth

You can start receiving CCB as soon as your child is born. Register through the Newborn Registration Service in most provinces, or apply via CRA My Account. Payments are not retroactive beyond 11 months.

4. Claim the Child Disability Benefit

If your child has a severe and prolonged mental or physical impairment, they may qualify for the Child Disability Benefit — worth up to $3,173/year extra. Apply with a completed T2201 form signed by a medical professional.

5. Set up direct deposit

CCB is paid on the 20th of each month (or the closest business day). Set up direct deposit in CRA My Account so funds arrive immediately — no waiting for cheques.

Frequently Asked Questions

What year's income is the 2025 CCB based on?
The CCB paid from July 2025 to June 2026 is based on your 2024 tax return (income from January–December 2024). The CCB paid from July 2024 to June 2025 was based on your 2023 return. This is why filing taxes on time is critical.
Is the CCB calculator accurate?
This calculator provides a good estimate using the standard CRA formula, but the actual amount may differ slightly due to rounding, special circumstances, or province-specific supplements. For your exact payment, log into CRA My Account.
Does the CCB affect my other benefits?
No. The CCB is not considered income for most purposes and does not affect your eligibility for the GST/HST credit, Ontario Trillium Benefit, or other income-tested programs. It is also not taxable income.
What if my income changed significantly this year?
The CCB is recalculated every July based on your prior year's tax return. If your income dropped significantly, your payments will go up next July. If it rose, payments will go down. There is no mid-year adjustment, but you can request a reassessment in extreme hardship cases.
What is the maximum CCB for 2025?
