Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for the Canada Child Benefit?
You qualify for the CCB if you're a Canadian resident who lives with a child under 18 and is primarily responsible for the child's care. You must file your taxes every year to continue receiving the benefit. Both parents should file, even if one has no income.
Is the Canada Child Benefit taxable?
No. The CCB is completely tax-free. You do not report it as income on your tax return, and it does not affect your eligibility for other income-tested benefits.
How do I apply for the Canada Child Benefit?
When you register the birth of your child with your provincial vital statistics office, the CRA is notified automatically in most provinces. You can also apply through CRA My Account, by filing your tax return and indicating you have a new child, or by completing Form RC66.
What income is used to calculate CCB?
The CCB is based on your "Adjusted Family Net Income" — line 23600 of your and your spouse's/common-law partner's tax returns from the prior tax year. The 2025 benefit year (July 2025–June 2026) is based on 2024 tax returns.
Does TFSA or RRSP income affect CCB?
TFSA withdrawals are not income and do not affect your CCB. RRSP withdrawals are taxable income and will increase your adjusted net income, potentially reducing your CCB. This is a key reason why TFSAs are often preferred for savings when you receive income-tested benefits.
