Frequently Asked Questions

Who gets the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
Any Ontario resident who files their income tax return and qualifies for the OEPTC, OSTC, or NOEC components. Renters, homeowners, seniors, and low-income families commonly receive the OTB. There's no separate application — it's claimed on your tax return.
How much is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
It varies widely by income and circumstances. Maximum combined OTB can be over $1,600/year for qualifying families. Singles on lower incomes might receive $400–$700/year. Use CRA's Benefits Finder at Canada.ca to estimate your amount.
Do renters qualify for the OTB?
Yes. Renters qualify for the OEPTC component, which takes into account the portion of rent deemed to cover property tax and energy costs. You need to report the total amount of rent you paid during the year on your tax return.
Is the Ontario Trillium Benefit taxable?
No. OTB payments are not taxable income. They do not need to be reported on your tax return and do not affect your eligibility for other federal benefits like the Canada Child Benefit or GST/HST credit.
Why did my OTB stop?
Common reasons include: you didn't file your tax return, your income increased above the threshold, you moved out of Ontario, or there was a change in your household situation. Check CRA My Account for details and ensure your 2024 tax return is filed.
