Understanding CPP Contributions

To receive the maximum CPP at age 65, you must have contributed at or above the Year's Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) for at least 39 years. Here are the key 2025 contribution limits:

Threshold2025 Amount
Basic exemption (no contributions below this)$3,500/year
YMPE (Year's Maximum Pensionable Earnings)$71,300/year
YAMPE (Additional YMPE for CPP2)$81,900/year
Employee CPP1 contribution rate5.95%
Employee CPP2 contribution rate4.00%
Maximum employee CPP1 + CPP2 contribution$4,430.10

CPP2 contributions (on earnings between $71,300 and $81,900) are separate and will generate additional CPP2 benefits starting in retirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this CPP calculator?
This calculator uses a simplified formula based on the ratio of your average earnings to the YMPE and your years of contribution. For a precise figure, log into My Service Canada Account where you'll find your Statement of Contributions showing your exact CPP entitlement.
What is the maximum CPP in 2025?
The maximum CPP retirement pension at age 65 in 2025 is $1,433.00 per month ($17,196/year). To receive this, you must have contributed at or near the maximum for approximately 39+ years.
Does CPP2 affect this calculator?
This calculator estimates your base CPP1 benefit. CPP2 enhancements (for earnings above $68,500/year from 2019 onward) will add additional income on top of this estimate, particularly for younger workers.
What if I have gaps in my contribution history?
Service Canada automatically excludes up to 17% of your lowest-earning months from the calculation (the "general drop-out provision"). Additional drop-out provisions apply for years raising children under 7, disability periods, and low-earning years.
Can I top up my CPP by contributing more?
No — you cannot make voluntary contributions to CPP. However, if you're still working after starting CPP (ages 60–70), you continue making contributions that generate Post-Retirement Benefits (PRB) which increase your monthly amount.
