Credit Freeze Canada: How to Lock Your Credit File
A credit freeze is free in Canada and prevents new fraudulent accounts from being opened in your name. Here is how to do it.
A credit freeze — also called a security freeze — is one of the most powerful fraud prevention tools available to Canadians. When you freeze your credit file at Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada, most lenders cannot access your file to approve new credit. This effectively prevents identity thieves from opening new accounts in your name, even if they have your personal information.
What a Credit Freeze Does in Canada
Prevents most lenders from pulling your credit file for new credit applications
Does not affect your existing accounts or credit score
Does not prevent you from checking your own score (soft inquiry)
Does not prevent existing lenders from reviewing your file on current accounts
Can be temporarily lifted (thawed) when you need to apply for credit
Is completely free in Canada (both bureaus)

You will need to verify your identity (name, address, date of birth, SIN)
Equifax will provide you a PIN or reference number to use when you want to temporarily lift the freeze

How to Temporarily Lift (Thaw) Your Freeze
When you're ready to apply for new credit, you can temporarily thaw your freeze:
Call the bureau or log in online and request a temporary lift
Specify a duration (e.g., 5 days) or lift it for a specific lender
Apply for your credit product during the thaw window
The freeze automatically re-engages after the specified period, or you can reinstate it immediately after your application
Does a Credit Freeze Affect Your Credit Score?
No. A credit freeze has zero effect on your credit score. It does not show up as a negative item. It does not prevent your score from improving or declining based on your regular credit activity. It simply blocks most new credit applications from going through — which is exactly what you want when you're protecting against fraud.
Note: A credit freeze in Canada is separate from a freeze in the US. If you have both Canadian and US credit files, you need to place freezes with the Canadian bureaus (Equifax Canada, TransUnion Canada) separately from the US bureaus (Equifax US, TransUnion US, Experian US). Canadian credit freezes only protect your Canadian file.
