Recommended R-Values by Canadian Climate Zone

In Ontario and Quebec (Zone 5-6), R-50 to R-60 in attics is now considered best practice for new construction. In Prairie provinces and northern Ontario (Zone 7), R-60+ attic insulation is recommended to cope with extreme cold.

DIY attic insulation costs $0.50–$1.00/sq ft in materials, versus $1.50–$2.50/sq ft installed by a contractor. However, DIY work typically doesn't qualify for the Greener Homes Grant, which requires contractor installation receipts.
