Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my BC Assessment value?
Visit bcassessment.ca and enter your property address. BC Assessment mails assessment notices in January each year. The assessed value reflects the estimated market value as of July 1 of the prior year.
Can I appeal my BC property assessment?
Yes. If you believe your assessment is inaccurate, you can file a Notice of Complaint with the Property Assessment Review Panel between January 1 and February 1. The appeal is free and based on whether the assessed value reflects market value.
When is BC property tax due?
Most BC municipalities have a property tax due date of July 2. Failure to pay by the deadline results in a 10% penalty on unpaid amounts. The provincial Home Owner Grant application deadline is also July 2 for most municipalities.
Does BC have a speculation and vacancy tax?
Yes. The BC Speculation and Vacancy Tax applies to residential properties in certain BC regions that are not a principal residence. The rate is 2% of assessed value for foreign owners and satellite families, and 0.5% for Canadian citizens/PRs who are not BC residents. This is in addition to regular property tax.
What is included in BC property tax?
Your BC property tax bill typically includes municipal taxes (for local services), the provincial school tax, hospital district levies, and other regional district levies. The provincial school tax is set by the province and applies at approximately 0.1% for the first $3M and 0.2% above that.
