The Law Society of BC primarily regulates lawyers. The unauthorized practice of law in BC is narrower than in Ontario. Non-lawyers in BC may provide many forms of document preparation and consultation that Ontario's by-law 4 reserves to licensed paralegals.
No. We do not represent parties before BC courts, tribunals, or hearings. We prepare the documents and strategy for the matter. The party files and represents themselves, or retains a BC lawyer where representation is required.
If the matter is governed by BC law (BC contract, BC family, BC employment), we can prepare documents from anywhere. If it requires court appearance, you would still need a BC lawyer to appear.
